A Texas high school student passed away Thursday after suffering a fatal cardiac episode during a gym practice, the Shepherd ISD said in a statement.
The district did not identify the victim but said that the tragic incident occurred during open gym practice at the school.
“One of our students experienced a cardiac episode while practicing, and despite immediate efforts from first responders, we received devastating news that the student passed away,” the statement read.
“Our entire school community is deeply saddened by this loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with the student’s family and loved one during this incredibly difficult time.”
The district also added that counselors will be made available for students and staff for the remainder of the week.
