4 officers killed; several hurt in shootout with gunman while trying to serve warrant at Charlotte home

Three officers with the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections veterans and a US Marshal were killed in an exchange of gunfire with a wanted suspect in Charlotte Monday afternoon.

Samuel “Sam” Polche; William “Alden” Elliot; Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer Joshua Eyer and a still unidentified US Marshal were reportedly trying to serve a warrant for a felon wanted for firearm possession at around 2 p.m. Monday.

Police said the suspect fired at the officers as they approached his home before he was gunned down in the front yard.

  • A second person then started firing at the cops from inside the residence; Following a three-hour standoff, a woman and a teen girl were found inside the home and were arrested as persons of interest.

    “Today is an absolute tragic day for the city of Charlotte and for the profession of law enforcement,” Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings said.

    “Today we lost some heroes that are out to just simply try to keep our community safe.”

    The suspect was later identified as 39-year-old Terry Clark Hughes. He was wanted for possession of a firearm by a felon and two counts of felony to elude in Lincoln County.
