An Air India flight carrying 242 passengers crashed just after taking off from Ahmedabad Airport in the Indian state of Gujarat, officials said.
Air India flight 171 went down just minutes after leaving the airport in the Meghani area of the town at around 1 p.m.
The flight was heading to London Gatwick when it began descending after reaching an altitude of 825 feet, authorities said.
Photos of the crash site shared on social media showed a massive trail of smoke and a large scale of damage, suggesting significant casualties.
“Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025,” Air India said on X.
“At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest.”
