Michigan prosecutors charge 1st defendant under new safe gun storage law after son shoots self in face

An 8-year-old Michigan boy is listed in “extremely critical” condition after he shot himself in the face in his family’s Warren, Michigan home on April 19.

The boy’s father, Theo Nichols, became on Monday the first defendant to be charged under the new safe gun storage law in Michigan.

  • The 56-year-old man was not allowed to have a firearm due to a previous conviction when his son used a chair to reach the gun that was “unsafely” and insecurely stored on top of the kitchen cabinet.

    “In the wake of this tragic incident, we are reminded of the profound responsibility that comes with gun ownership,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said.

    Nichols also faces charges of child abuse. He is being held on a $250,000 bond.
