Kansas toddler shot and killed by officer’s stray bullet amid shootout that saw 90 rounds fired

Authorities in Baxter Springs, Kansas are investigating a police-involved shooting that left a 2-year-old girl dead Saturday.

The girl was identified as Clesslynn Crawford; her father Eli Crawford, 37, was reportedly involved in a domestic incident with her mother Taylor Shutte who was later killed.

Crawford refused to surrender after shooting Shutte dead in police presence and barricaded himself and Clesslynn inside their camping trailer.

  • After a fierce shootout with police officers from Baxter Springs, Cherokee County, Joplin Police, and the KBI that saw the suspect firing more than 90 bullets at law enforcement from different guns, a Baxter Springs officer fired a shot into the trailer, hitting Clesslynn.

    “This is a horrific outcome to what had already started as a very tragic incident,” Joplin Police Chief Sloan Rowland said.

    “Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families involved and the surrounding community. We ask that you pray for the victims and everyone involved.”
