RI boy, 14, charged with murder after shooting another teen to death

A Rhode Island boy was charged with murder after he allegedly shot another teen on February 1, authorities said.

The 14-year-old suspect was on Tuesday afternoon arraigned in Rhode Island Family Court, Providence Police said.

Officers arrived at Legion Memorial Drive in response to shots fired near the entrance of Neutaconkanut Park and found 17-year-old Emil Rodriguez lying unresponsive in the street.

The victim was declared dead at the scene. A subsequent investigation led to the juvenile’s arrest.

  • “The fact that a 14-year-old was involved it’s just sad to see,” Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez said.

    Rodriguez’ mother set up a GoFundMe page in the aftermath of her son’s tragic passing.

    “On February 1, my son, Emil, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. He was shot and killed, leaving our family lost and broken,” Evelyn Rodriguez said.

    “Emil had just turned 17. He was a friendly and outgoing boy, who was looking forward to graduating high school and pursuing a career as an ironworker.”
