An Arkansas girl was attacked and killed Wednesday while trying to feed a pack of malnourished dogs at a property near her home.

15-year-old Makayla Fortner was found dead shortly after noon at a White Oak home where at least 18 dogs were left to starve in deplorable conditions.

Neighbors said Makayla and her mother had recently started helping the dogs, and the teen even tried to find permanent homes for them.

  • “These dogs were very vicious at the fence, to the point that no one wanted to let their children walk to and from the bus stop,” one said.

“I had called Saline County and they sent a deputy and said that there’s not any animal control in the county and there’s nothing that they can do,” another added.

Benton City officials euthanized 14 dogs following the deadly incident. Four dogs were found locked up inside the property and were not involved in the attack.

“It’s just too late. So I think our government failed us, and if somebody had done something, then maybe this little girl would be alive,” the neighbor said.
