Mississippi girl, 14, goes on rampage inside family home killing mother, wounding stepfather

A Mississippi girl was charged with murder Wednesday after she allegedly fatally shot her mother and wounded her stepfather before he wrestled the gun away from her.

Carly Madison Gregg then jumped over the backyard fence and fled before police located her through a helicopter search and arrested her about half an hour later.

The 40-year-old victim, identified as Ashley Smylie was found dead by her husband, 38-year-old Heath Smylie, at around 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Heath also found the teen standing near her deceased mother, holding a pistol before she shot him.

  • Ashley was a math teacher at Northwest Rankin High School where Carly was a student.

    Carly was charged as an adult with murder and attempted murder. She pleaded not guilty to the charges Wednesday morning and was moved to Rankin County adult jail.

    “You probably won’t see this, I don’t care if you do, but really you could reach out to [somebody] other than take the life of an amazing WOMAN,” a comment on Gregg’s social media read.

    “Because now you have made an even bigger problem with yourself and others, did you feel proud?”
