A Wisconsin man died in jail days after he was arrested for allegedly ramming his car into a family, killing a mother and her dog.
Jeffrey Endres, 49, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Dane County Jail on Tuesday.
He received life-saving measures at the scene, but could not be saved. Detectives processed the scene and collected evidence as part of their investigation.
The cause and manner of death remain unclear. An autopsy is set for Thursday.
On Monday, Endres was charged with first-degree intentional homicide, two counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide, and mistreatment of animals causing death.
Police said Endres intentionally struck Dr. Kami Hansen, her husband, son, and dog while they were out on a walk in Cottage Grove on April 28.
Hansen and the dog were killed in the alleged intentional crash. Prosecutors said Endres acted in retaliation for a “sensitive crime” involving his child and Hansen’s.
“It has come to light that this was not an accident. This was an intentional act by Mr. Endres,” Deputy District Attorney William Brown said.
“This was, as the complaint shows, essentially an act of vigilante justice.”
