A giant crane collapsed at the construction site for a new central Florida hospital, killing two people on Wednesday, authorities said.
The incident unfolded at the site of Cape Canaveral Hospital in Merritt Island, about 60 miles southeast of Orlando.
The victims were rushed to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Both were reportedly trade contract workers.
Investigators are working to determine the cause of the collapse that occurred in an area that has recently been impacted by bad weather.
“We share our deepest condolences with the families, loved ones, and co-workers,” Gilbane Building Co., the contractor for the project, stated through a spokesperson.
“The site is secure, and work is currently being suspended. We are supporting our trade contractors and working with them and the authorities on an active investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
