A tsunami warning was issued after a powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake rocked the coast off Chile and Argentina Friday morning.
The United States Geological Survey said the tremor struck at a depth of 10km around 200km (124 miles) south of Puerto Williams at 9 a.m. local time.
Four smaller aftershocks were recorded in the region after the major quake. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration warned residents in Chile and Antarctica of tsunami waves that could reach 9ft.
Videos showed people in the coastal Magallanes Region dramatically evacuating their homes and cars speeding out of the risky zone.
“We call for evacuation of the coastline throughout the Magallanes region,” Chilean President Gabriel Boric said on X.
The National Disaster Prevention and Response System said that officials “continue to assess the impact on people and damage to infrastructure and basic services.”
