Powerful explosion levels Missouri home, killing man, dog

The remains of a man and a dog were found in the rubble of a home that had been leveled by a powerful blast early Saturday morning.

The first reports of the explosion emerged at around 11:14 a.m. Saturday, sending first responders to the scene in the 100 block of 74th Terrace in Gladstone, about 10 miles north of Kansas City.

A man and a large breed dog were found dead. Another dog remains missing.

  • “All of a sudden, there was a huge explosion that just shook the whole house,” a neighbor recalled.

    “It was scary as heck…At first, we didn’t know, but then we saw this huge cloud of black smoke just coming up into the air.”

    As the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Missouri State Fire Marshal investigate the blast, gas company Spire Inc. said that a gas leak was not a factor.

    “It is total destruction. The house just looks like splinters,” the neighbor added.
