Manhunt ongoing for gunman who posed as cop, shot 2 lawmakers, one fatally

A Minnesota lawmaker and her husband were fatally shot at their Brooklyn Park home early Saturday morning by a suspect who posed as a cop, and shot another lawmaker and his wife multiple times.

State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, were gunned down at their home at around 3:35 a.m.

A couple of hours before the incident, the suspect targeted the Champlin home of State Senator John Hoffman, shooting him and his wife multiple times.

The couple underwent surgery and is listed in critical condition, Governor Tim Walz said.

“We’re here today because an unspeakable tragedy has unfolded. State Representative Melissa Hortman, a Democrat, was assassinated, and her husband Mark was also killed.

  • Police engaged the suspect after Hortman’s shooting, but he managed to escape, triggering a frantic manhunt.

    “I’ve activated the State Emergency Operations Center. Local law enforcement in Champlin and Brooklyn Park have the full resources of the State of Minnesota behind them,” Walz wrote on X.

    “Police are looking for a suspect in multiple targeted shootings who is armed and dangerous,” an alert to residents read.

    “Suspect is white male, brown hair, wearing black body armor over a blue shirt and blue pants, and may misrepresent himself as law enforcement.”

    Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley said that a manifesto and a list of intended targets, including the two lawmakers, were found in the suspect’s vehicle.
