A Kansas boy has died weeks after he suffered a brain injury during a basketball tournament, authorities said.

Shama’ar Jefferson, 13, succumbed to a traumatic brain injury he sustained on March 30 during a basketball game.

The boy had complained of headaches and blurry vision after the first half of the game. He then collapsed and was rushed to Wesley Children’s Hospital, where he underwent surgery.

  • “We found that he had a brain bleed, needing brain surgery and intensive care,” the teen’s parents said on a GoFundMe page.

    In an update posted on April 20, Shama’ar’s mother shared that he had not woken up since collapsing.

    “He’s a spectacular kid, and for this to happen, there are no words to describe the things he’s going through. It just hurts me,” she added.
