An Arizona teen is dead after she tried a social media trend known as “dusting” earlier this week, her parents said.
Renna O’Rourke, 19, spent seven days in the ICE and never regained consciousness after she reportedly tried a TikTok trend in which people sniff computer dusting spray and get high.
“She always said, ‘I’m going to be famous, Dad. Just you watch. I’m going to be famous,’ and unfortunately, this is not under the most optimal of circumstances,” the teen’s father, Aaron O’Rourke, said.
“There’s no ID required. It’s odorless. It’s everything kids look for. They can afford it, they can get it, and it doesn’t show in mom and dad’s drug test,” mom Dana O’Rourke said.
Dr. Randy Weisman said that it is not the first time young people have died from trying social media trends, including “dusting, chroming, and huffing.”
“When they inhale these chemicals in the gas, it will actually replace the oxygen within their lungs and within the rest of their body,” the doctor explained.
Weisman said that in a short amount of time, one huff can cause irreversible damage such as “failure of the liver, heart failure, disease of the lungs.”
