Chicago officer shot to death while on duty, leaving behind young daughter

A Chicago police officer was gunned down while on duty late Thursday night, leaving behind her young daughter, authorities said.

The shooting occurred shortly before 10 p.m. when officers patrolling Drexel Avenue tried to conduct an investigatory stop on a male suspect.

As the officers approached the suspect, he reportedly fled to a nearby building where another suspect confronted them.

“The armed offender fled the residence and was taken into custody,” authorities said.

    The fallen officer was identified as 36-year-old Krystal Rivera, a mother to a young daughter and a four-year veteran of the department.

    “She lost her life tragically doing the job that she loved and that was one of the things that her mother said, she loved her job and the way that she worked, it was evident that she did love her job and she wanted to make Chicago a better place,” Superintendent Larry Snelling said.

    “She wanted to make it safer.”
