Texas woman dies from brain-eating amoeba infection after cleaning sinuses with tap water

A woman died from a brain-eating amoeba infection in Texas after she used unboiled tap water to clean her sinuses at a campground.

The 71-year-old woman, who was healthy before the infection, died eight days after experiencing symptoms including fever, headache, and altered mental status.

    Authorities did not disclose the exact area where the infection occurred but said testing of water sources surrounding the campground revealed no amoeba presence.

    The CDC warned people of the risks of using or contacting fresh water during recreational water activities or when rinsing nasal passages.
