Texas man kills contractor, wraps body in blanket before asking stranger to help move furniture

A stranger who agreed to help a Texas man move furniture made the gruesome discovery of a slain man in a box, police said.

Steven Eberly, 36, faces charges of murder and tampering with evidence in connection with the killing of Luis Silva Mendez.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office received multiple calls around 11 a.m. Friday, sending deputies to a home in the 3700 block of FM 1960.

  • Once at the scene, deputies found a slain man’s body wrapped in a blanket in front of the home’s garage.

    They later learned that the suspected killer had asked a stranger to help move furniture before the stranger spotted the body in a box.

    Terrified by the discovery, the stranger took off in the victim’s truck, but Eberly tried to stop him, leading to a crash that wounded the suspect.

    Eberly’s girlfriend told detectives she was at work at the time of the killing. She identified the victim as a contractor who was working at the residence.
