A new pope was selected on the second and final day of the conclave after white smoke rose from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel late Thursday.
The name of the candidate who secured at least 89 votes of the 133 cardinals participating in the conclave will be announced later from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica.
The next pontiff is expected to make an appearance on the balcony overlooking the place within an hour.
Crowds gathered in St. Pete’s Square Thursday evening, waiting to find out who the 267th pontiff will be and chanting “Abbiamo Papa, ole, ole, ole” and “Viva il Papa.”
