A Princeton soccer star stands accused of a depraved crime after he allegedly slaughtered his younger brother and ate the victim’s eyeball inside their luxury apartment.
Matthew Hertgen, 31, allegedly used a knife and a golf club to brutally beat and kill his 26-year-old brother Joseph Hertgen in their Michelle Mews apartment late Saturday.
Police found a bloody knife, a fork and a plate next to the victim’s body. Investigators believe Matthew ate his slain brother’s eyeball.
The suspect is also accused of burning a cat to death before calling 911, sending officers to the macabre scene.
Matthew, who attended the private college Wesleyan University, suffered from schizophrenia and had been admitted to several mental health facilities before the slaying.
The victim was a University of Michigan graduate and worked as a banker. The siblings have a third brother who works for their father’s WiLine Networks internet provider firm in New York City.
